Franz Josef to Ross. On the road again. Continuing along the coast northward through rolling farmland and sections of native forest. Arrived in Ross to find a working mining town -- very different feel from the tourist magnets of Fox and Franz Joseph. Right across the street from where we are staying is the huge (huge, as in stadium sized) pit where they are still digging for gold. We ended up pitching our tent next to the old Empire Hotel. You walk right up to the bar to book your accomodation with the bartender. The Empire is an old place -- dark and a bit run down but with lots of character.

Tin sculpture hangs from the porch out front and a fence crafted out of old rusted car and farm machinery parts runs around the property next door. A grill sits out front so that you can B.Y.O. (Barbeque Your Own).
